This Long Delightful Summer and the Joy of Assembling a Jigsaw Puzzle

There is something soothing about putting together a jigzaw puzzle.

To me it evokes the feeling of endlessly long, endlessly carefree, childhood school holidays.

I’m doing a puzzle on my terrace. I’m having a delightful time. The air is balmy, the sky is blue and the sun beams brightly yellow. I’m enjoying a leisurely afternoon in the soothing shade of my terrace sun blinds. The puzzle is a vintage one depicting the Disney friends enjoying a picnic. I will most certainly not ever grow too old for Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Huey, Dewey and Louie, Grandma Duck, Mickey and Minnie Mouse. They always bring a smile to my face.

I enjoy doing jigsaw puzzles. Assembling a puzzle signals that I have plenty of time. It reassures that these are innocent and wholesome times. I can play. I can rest.

It brings forth the same feeling as spendning idle days at a summer house cottage does.

Solving crosswords. Reading children’s cartoon comics from decades ago. Drinking home made raspberry juice.

Sensing the scent of sun tan lotion. The scent of warm sun against the plastic on the swing hammock in the garden.

It’s those childhood days when you wake up and have no plan whatsoever on how to spend the day.

The day just lays there before you. Deliciously carefree. Brimming with potential of all the fun stuff you can do.

I like looking for jigzaw puzzles from bygone eras in thrift stores.

I choose the jigsaw puzzles I find beautiful. The ones that exude harmony. The ones that make me feel good looking at them.

As we all know, we create our own reality, and the reality of the collective, with what we believe, think and speak and feel. We create with what we choose to believe, think and speak and feel. It is always a personal choice.

As we all know, we are highly influenced by what we put our attention too. By what we choose to focus on. Whether it is a movie we watch, a book we read, a song we listen to, a person we interact with. How does a certain book you read make you feel? A song you listen to? How does a certain person make you feel?

I like harmony. I like feeling harmony. Feeling safe. Feeling that all is well. Feeling joyful. Llight at heart. I like creating these states of being. I am very deliberate in what reality I choose to create.

After all, how about this – what if instead of learning how to become more resilient, we make this world a less traumatic place to be?

I like going for jig saw puzzles with patterns easy to assemble. Not too many pieces. Between 200 and 500 pieces are ideal. I find it rewarding when each piece has fairly easy accessible information. When a jigsaw puzzle depicts a world map, I prefer there to be motives on areas that otherwise just convey ocean. I appreciate those extra motives to depict items that teaches me something. Motives like animals, plants or geographical highlights from certain regions.

I start doing a puzzle by turning all the pieces picture-side-up. I then put together the edges, sort the pieces into groups of colors if the puzzle is a larger piece and off I go.

I know there are competitions out there on how to do a jigsaw puzzle quickly. That’s not for me.

I take my time. Feel into the moment. Enjoy the feeling of idleness. The feeling that all is deliciosly well.

Although being really into vintage jigsaw puzzles, some newly made catch my attention too.

The puzzles depicting paintings of Swedish artist Bengt Elde are stunning.

Bengt Elde – Vaxholmsfantasi
Bengt Elde – Skärgård
Bengt Elde – Rosa Blom

Being a huge lover of the Archipelago surrounding Sweden (skärgård in Swedish) I adore how Bengt Elde chose to depict this world. Hat’s off.

You can find Bengt Elde’s puzzles here.

Another Swedish artist who has paintings filled with seaside deliciousness made into puzzles is Gunilla Mann. Do you see Abba performing in the forefront? Delicious.

Gunilla Mann – Stockholm
