What is the Month of September to you? What about it do you like?
I adore these early autumns days.
As the weather turns from summer to fall, there is a delightful crispness in the air. There is a chill that is delightfully refreshing.
The temperatures have dropped and some days the sun is shining from a clear blue sky. All is crisp and clear. Now and then there is the delicious scent of burning wood from fireplaces in houses close by.
Other days are beautifully damp and misty. I enjoy going for long hikes in the forest during these damp days. Some days to go looking for mushrooms, other days for no particular reason. Just for the pure joy. The forest gives off such a delightful earthy scent. Very much like petrichor, the earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil.
I personally associate the Month of September with the colors purple and mauve. The latter is a pale purple color named after the mallow flower. These purple hues are displayed lusciously in nature this time of year.
In leaves, vegetables, fruits and flowers.
I delight in picking plums. Ripe and juicy ones. I marvel at their beauty. I like sitting with them and study them closely. Then take a bite and really taste them. Smell them. Inhale their scent.
Another one of my September delights is to pickle cucumbers. This year I’ve made a couple of different versions. Some with salt, some with vinegar. I’ve added generous amounts of dill, black currant leaves, horse radish and pimento. Cloves of garlic in some.
I also use the leaves of the black currant bush for tea. I bring a big kettle to boil and drink the potion as a warm beverage. As it cools down, I drink the rest cold throughout the day. It’s delicious. Highly nutritious too.
A sound that I always eargerly await this time of year is the sound of jackdaws as they gather together for the night. I adore this sound. To me, it evokes a feeling of autumn and the first arrival of cold weather. It has an old and magical medieval castle like sound to it. Like living in an enchanted world.
I enjoy listening to the sound of crows too.
How would you want to honor the Month of September if you were to choose a couple of items and activities to symbolize the month?
