Gunhild Carling – Top Notch Class Act of the Classic Entertainment Era

I recently went to see a concert with Swedish Vocalist and Multi-Instrumentalist Gunhild Carling. She is serving old hot jazz and swing at its finest. What a treat indeed.

I talk about it here.

Here is clip from the concert. Gunhild Carling performs at the Beach house in Sibbarp, Sweden, 29th of August 2023.

Another clip from the concert, Gunhild Carling at the piano.

Some more great action from the concert.

Gunhild Carling playing three trumpets – at the same time.

Gunhild Carling from an earlier performance – yes, playing three trumpets simultaneously. What a one of a kind musician Gunhild Carling is.

Carling grew up in a family of musicians and started performing together with her parents, her brothers and sister at a young age. This is how Gunhild Carling herself describes her childhood:

“I haven’t ever been to a music teacher. I come from a family that plays music. I grew up in the south of Sweden, outside of Malmö. Our house was full of variety – circus, acting, dance, vaudeville and novelty. I just picked up instruments from when I was very young and played them. I started with the drums, then the recorder, trombone and trumpet. Then I started tap dancing, and after that harmonica and bagpipe. Later, I began composing music.”

Here she is performing “Bei Mir Bist Du Schön” with her family.

The song became a worldwide hit, when it was recorded by the Andrews Sisters in 1937.

Gunhild Carling is such a great role model for showing that anything is possible.

Want to explore an instrument? Go for it. Want to explore 20 instruments? Sure. Just do it.

I love that attitude towards life.
