Historic Seaside Resort Hotels – Exploring Grand Getaways From The Past

I enjoy architecture. I love to explore buildings. Whenever I travel I love looking into local architecture.

I love generous architecture. Architecture that salutes beauty. That salutes comfort and pleasure. That is generous and inviting. Large windows. High ceilings.

I talk about it here.

Some days ago I went on a trip exploring historic beachfront hotels. Seaside hotels. Hotels that carry old school charm. I delight in marine architecture. Buildings in white. I have a thing for old grand mansions in white. Buildings that give off a grand air of leisure. Of long and carefree days. Of holiday, of feeling rested, light-hearted and free, taking in the balmy ocean air. Eager to meet the next adventure I have planned for the day.

I paid a visit to historic Grand Hôtel Mölle in the equally historic seaside resort Mölle in Sweden. In early 1900 this was a fashionable sea side resort. Luxurious and high end.

I enjoy visiting these seaside resorts off season. Now, early November, this coastal hideaway is deliciously peaceful and still. The sun is shining and the air is autumnal high and clear. I feel luxurious wandering around, having these magnificent settings all to myself.

I breath ocean air deep into my lungs. I love the scent of ocean. So refreshing. Revitalizing.

Grand Hôtel Mölle is a stunning throwback oasis overlooking the sea. A classic seaside gem.

The hotel first opened its doors in 1909. It’s built in Art Noveau Style, also referred to as Jugend. The building also contains National Romantic Style and displays a large grand white wooden porch.

The hotel carries large dining rooms with a spectacular ocean view, tables with white tablecloths and and a grand piano. I walk around in these rooms. I feel as if time has stood still since early 1900.

As a writer I love staying in places like this, to write.

Beautiful words in a beautiful setting.

I like to enjoy a hotel stay with all senses. The softness of the bed linen against the skin. The taste of delicious foods. The scent of the salty ocean air. The ocean view. The reassuring sound of the ocean waves. Sea birds in the air.

During this early 1900 era Mölle had around 20 hotels and a direct train line to and from Berlin. Other foreign guests travelled by steamboat from Copenhagen. These steamers arrived in Mölle twice a day.

The eagerly awaited opening of Grand Hôtel Mölle was performed during the Midsummer festivities in June 1909 and was celebrated in grand style.

I also went to have a look at Hotel Kullaberg from 1875. This is an architectural beauty in white and pale green and has a long row of windows overlooking the ocean a few feet away. The rooms have kept their turn of the century style.

This hotel had German Emperor Wilhelm II as a guest in July 1907, as he was staying in Mölle with his yacht on an unofficial visit for a couple of days.
